Collagen for Skin: What Is It and Why Does It Matter?

Learn about collagen’s role in the skin, how it changes with age and what this can mean for the appearance of mature skin.

Collagen is an important structural protein found naturally throughout the body, including the skin. As we age, changes in collagen are one of several factors that can influence how firm, smooth and plump our skin appears. Here, we look at what collagen is, how it changes over time and how to care for mature skin as visible signs of ageing emerge.

What is Collagen?

Collagen is a structural protein found throughout the body, including in the skin, bones, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Within the skin, collagen is primarily found in the dermis, where it forms part of the skin's natural supporting structure.

There are many different types of collagen in the human body, each with different roles. When it comes to skin, collagen is closely associated with characteristics such as firmness, structure and a plump appearance.

What does collagen do in the skin?

Together with other components of the skin, including elastin, collagen contributes to its natural structure and resilience.

Younger skin typically appears smooth, firm and plump. As we get older, changes take place within the skin that can gradually become visible on the surface. Fine lines and wrinkles may become more noticeable, skin can appear less firm and facial contours may look less defined.

These are natural changes associated with ageing.

How does collagen change with age?

Our skin changes throughout life. Over time, the amount and organisation of collagen within the skin can change, alongside changes to elastin, moisture and other components of the skin.

Hormonal changes, including those associated with menopause, can also influence the skin. During this stage of life, many women notice increased dryness and more visible changes in firmness, elasticity and facial contours.

The result is different for everyone, but wrinkles may become more noticeable and skin can appear thinner, drier or less plump than it did previously.

What other factors influence the appearance of ageing skin?

Ageing is a natural process, but many factors can influence how our skin looks over time. Genetics, lifestyle and environmental exposure all play a role.

Sun exposure is particularly relevant to the visible signs of skin ageing, while smoking, diet, sleep and other lifestyle factors may also influence the skin's overall appearance.

A balanced lifestyle, appropriate sun protection and a consistent skincare routine can all form part of caring for your skin throughout life.

Can food provide collagen?

Collagen occurs naturally in animal-derived foods. Foods such as meat, fish, gelatine and bone broth can contain collagen or its components.

The body also requires a variety of nutrients as part of normal collagen formation. A balanced diet containing protein and nutrients such as vitamin C contributes to normal body functions.

Plant foods do not naturally contain collagen. However, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and other plant foods can provide nutrients that form part of a varied, balanced diet.

What about collagen supplements?

Collagen supplements are commonly available as powders, drinks and capsules. Once consumed, collagen is digested, so taking collagen isn't the same as directly adding collagen to the skin.

Research into collagen supplementation continues, and the evidence and potential benefits can depend on factors such as the type of collagen, formulation and intended use.

Can you apply collagen to your skin?

Collagen is also used as an ingredient in some cosmetic formulations. However, applying collagen to the surface of the skin is different from the collagen naturally present within the dermis.

Rather than focusing on adding collagen, a good skincare routine can address the visible characteristics associated with mature skin, such as dryness, loss of firmness and elasticity, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Moisturising skincare can also help skin feel softer and smoother and contribute to a plumper, more radiant-looking complexion.
