Skin-to-Skin: Why It Matters (For Baby and Mum)

Skin-to-skin contact is often spoken about in the hours immediately after birth, but its benefits go far beyond those early days. It is one of the simplest, most effective ways to support both a baby’s health and a mother’s wellbeing, and it can continue to play an important role in the weeks and months that follow birth.

Why skin-to-skin is so powerful

When a newborn is placed directly onto a parent’s bare chest, the body begins a remarkable process of regulation and connection. Research shows that skin-to-skin helps to stabilise a baby’s temperature, breathing and heart rate, supporting their transition from womb to world. It also promotes more successful breastfeeding outcomes, with babies more likely to latch well and establish feeding sooner (Australian Breastfeeding Association, 2025).

The benefits extend beyond physical stability. Skin-to-skin is known to reduce stress in both mother and baby, as the release of oxytocin promotes calmness and connection. Exposure to a parent’s skin flora also supports the development of a healthy immune system (Australian College of Midwives, 2025).

Importantly, this practice is not limited to the immediate post-birth period. Skin-to-skin can be used any time a baby is unsettled, unwell or simply in need of comfort. Many families find it a valuable tool in the early months to promote bonding, assist with feeding and provide reassurance during times of distress.

The role of touch and baby massage

Touch is one of the earliest and most powerful forms of communication between parent and baby. Beyond skin-to-skin, gentle infant massage has been shown to support relaxation, relieve colic and wind, improve circulation and muscle tone, and enhance bonding between parent and child (Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, 2025).

Incorporating a short massage into a daily routine can become a calming ritual for both baby and parent. Using a natural oil, such as Weleda’s Calendula Baby Oil, ensures that delicate skin is nourished and protected while also supporting the gentle rhythm of touch.

A simple routine to try

Choose a calm, warm space where both you and your baby feel comfortable (often mum / dads bed is best). Warm a small amount of oil between your hands and use gentle, rhythmic strokes along their legs, arms, tummy and back. Always follow your baby’s cues, if they appear unsettled, keep the massage brief and try again another time.

Even just a few minutes can have a positive effect, helping babies relax and often supporting better sleep. For parents, it can be a grounding, mindful pause in an otherwise busy day.

Skin-to-skin and baby massage are not just pleasant additions to a baby’s routine, they are evidence-based practices that nurture both physical health and emotional wellbeing. These simple, accessible tools provide comfort, support breastfeeding, and foster deep connection in the early months of life.
