Water is the foundation of the water phase and solvent for hydrophilic (water-loving) substances.

Adding substances to alcohol that make it unsuitable for consumption is labelled "Alcohol denat.” Weleda uses only substances of natural origin for this function.

Glycerin is a natural ingredient in vegetable and animal fats and oils, which mainly consists of triglycerides (compound of glycerol with three fatty acids). In cosmetic products glycerin is used as a moisturising agent due to its hygroscopic (water-attracting) properties. Besides that, it helps with the distribution of O/W emulsions (oil-in-water-emulsions) and it smoothes and protects the skin.

The pale yellow to clear sunflower oil is a light vegetable oil. It works as a perfect massage oil and it is ideal for the attention of normal and combination skin. Due to its high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic and oleic acid, it is full of skin caring properties and it is suitable as a carrier oil for active substances.

The Jojoba plant is an evergreen shrub that bears olive-shaped fruits and grows wild in arid environments such as, Israel, Arizona Mexico and South America. Jojoba Seed Oil is derived from the seeds (beans) within the fruits. This oil is an oily liquid wax that is very similar to the protective layer of the human skin. At the same time, it supports the barrier function of the skin. Thereby it protects the skin against water loss without leaving it greasy. It is very skin friendly, easily absorbed and is therefore a suitable care product for all skin types, especially for dry skin. It is also very suitable as a base oil in products because it’s very stable and doesn’t oxidise (go rancid) easily.

Lysolezithin is an emulsifier that is used for stabilising O/W emulsions (oil-in-water-emulsions). Lysolecithin is also a modified lecithin that is derived from vegetable oils. It restores the natural oils of the skin.

Tapioca is the starch gained from the cassava (manioc) root. It is a white powder that is used in cosmetic products to improve consistency.

Viola Tricolor Extract is especially characterised by its long-chain sugars. These form a moisturising and protective layer on the skin. Therefore, the extract is very suitable for the care of dry and sensitive skin.

Rosemary leaves contain the essential rosemary oil, caffeic acid derivatives, flavonoids and triterpenes. Rosemary leaf extracts have a tonic effect. They are suitable as ingredients in skin care products for tired, pale skin.

The Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract of the flowers, stems and leaves of the chamomile plant contains essential oils, flavone derivatives and coumarin. Chamomile flower extracts have a skin-soothing effect and support the regeneration of the skin.

Calendula blossoms have a light- to dark-orange colour and are typical of the Calendula flower. They contain various carotenoids, flavonoids and saponins. Calendula Officinalis Flower Extracts have smoothing properties and support the regeneration of the skin.

Betaine is an amino acid derivative and occurs both in plants and in the human organism. In cosmetic products, Betaine is used as a moisturizer in products for the skin as well as the hair, as it is able to absorb and release water. Betaine is obtained from sugar molasses.

Vitamin E is isolated from vegetable oils. It is used as an antioxidant (free radical scavenger).

Acacia gum is the dried sap of the acacia tree. It consists of long-chain branched carbohydrates. Acacia gum is used as a binder and thickening agent and has a firming effect on the skin.

Xanthan Gum is a high molecular weight, long chain carbohydrate (polysaccharide), which is used as a natural gelling agent, emulsion stabiliser, binder and viscosity regulator.

Cetearyl Alcohol is a co-emulsifying agent, an emollient agent for O/W-Emulsions (oil-in-water- emulsions) and improves consistency. Cetearyl Alcohol is gained from plant oils and supports the formation of a stable emulsion. It also has a moisturising effect.

Citric Acid is an organic fruit acid and is used in low concentrations in the emulsions to stabilise the pH-value.

Fragrance (Parfum) is the collective name for raw materials that are used to perfume cosmetic products. For such products, Weleda only ever uses a mixtures of natural essential oils. Synthetic fragrances are not utilised.
